The South Elgin Lions Club was founded in 1954. The main purpose of the club is to serve the community and raise public awarness of blindness and diabetes. There are several ways this is accomplished. For example, at Riverfest we free Vision / hearing testing in the "Sight and Sound" trailer. We played a game of Beep Ball baseball along with Carpentersville Lions against the World Champion Chicago Comets. Beep Baseball is a modified game of baseball where all the players are blindfolded - the ball beeps and the bases buzz - it's a humbling experience and the Comets (all players on the Comets are Legally Blind) have beat us handily 2 years in a row. The game is a lot of fun and we hope to continue this project. Lions members also stand on street corners for Candy Day to raise money for the Lions of Illinois Foundation. All in all Lions members are a very giving bunch ... in short WE SERVE!
We collect the following:
- Used Eyeglasses
- Used Hearing Aids
- Unwanted Keys
- Used Stamps
- Cell Phones
Used Eyeglasses -- We have many eyeglass collection boxes around town - local eye doctors as well as our collection boxes. We have a collection box next to the Village Hall on the circle in Panton Mill Park, we also have a big collection box at our facility. Used eyeglasses are turned in to Lions International and they are distributed to those in need in developing countries.
Used Hearing Aids (Used Hearing aids are distributed locally (within Illinois))
